Controversial Theobroma Cacao

Raw cacao was touted as a "superfood" for quite a long time -- and many people still rave about the positive effects of the antioxidants found in cacao. More antioxidant flavonoids than any food, including blueberries, red wine and green tea. Raw cacao is a great source of magnesium, iron, sulphur, zinc and potassium.

In my recent research, I have turned up a number of opponents who claim that no animal in nature will eat cacao unless a) tricked or b) it's mixed with milk and that is one of the most highly addictive substances on earth. Some even claim that consuming mega-doses of raw cacao can cause hallucinations and all sorts of crazy behavior.

Well, everything in moderation, I say. There is a difference in flavor between raw cacao powder and regular cocoa powder. I use raw cacao powder when I make a protein powder shake for breakfast or lunch -- it's also great to mix into sauces for a rich gravy or mole.

The Navitas site has a ton of great recipes for raw desserts using raw cacao powder -- some are pretty easy and tasty -- give them a try!
