Re-use Newspaper Before Recycling

A collection of ways you can re-use newspaper before recycling it!

Sustainable Wrapping Paper That's Easy to Find

Wrapping paper has to be one of the worst environmental offenders in terms of waste - it's entire purpose is to be ripped off and thrown away. If we all wanted to be good stewards of the earth, we would stop wrapping presents and instead give them in bags that people can re-use the next time they have a present to give.

That being said, there is something special about giving or receiving a gift shrouded in mystery (aka wrapping paper), that just isn't satisfied by hiding it in a bag. If you feel this way, try using newspaper instead of wrapping paper and putting a bow on top that can be re-used by the giftee. While this may seem tacky, it is actually really cute, and newspaper is 100% recyclable.

This is a great way to make a statement and be kind to the earth without having to sacrifice the little pleasures we all love so much, like ripping open a gift you have been waiting for all year.

Uses for Old Newspaper

I have a bit of a conundrum -- since I read my news online, I rarely have a newspaper handy for recycling. I have resorted, in dark times, to raiding the free weekly newspaper box on the corner to get newspaper for my needs.

There are many great uses for old newspaper. As other contributors have noted, they are great for wrapping paper.

Newspapers can be used to:
* Wash windows - use some white vinegar & water and see your windows sparkle!
* Deodorize food containers. Stuff a balled-up piece of newspaper into a lunch box or thermos, seal it, and let sit overnight.
* Ripen tomatoes. Wrap them individually and leave them out at room temperature.
* Pack delicate items.Wrap frames and figurines with several pieces of newspaper, then crumple the remaining sections to fill extra space in the box.
* Preserve antique glass. Some older frames have finishes on the glass that can be damaged by cleaning solutions. Remove smudges by rubbing with newspaper dipped in a solution of one part white vinegar and one part warm water. Let air-dry.
* Dry shoes. Place crumpled paper in them overnight.
* Prepare a garden. In the fall, mow a patch of lawn to make room for a dedicated bed. Cover it with four layers of newspaper, then a four-inch layer of shredded leaves or bark mulch. Hose it down. Come spring, the compost blanket will have smothered the grass roots, and the bed will be primed for planting.
* Keep the refrigerator vegetable drawer dry and free of smells. Line the bottom with newspaper.

If that's not enough, here are 80 more uses for newspaper:

It's not just black and white anymore!

Green was still just a color when I eliminated wrapping paper. It's been more than a decade now since I've used anything but newsprint. I do a very careful job - neat corners - and like to add a ribbon. I think it looks great - my family has adjusted.

Once the sheer waste of wrapping paper got to me there was no going back. I mourn the loss of the green sports pages, but the Financial Times is a peachy replacement. (It's a great newspaper, too.)

Additional Reusable Wrapping Paper Ideas

To go one step further in using reusable wrapping materials, I use the black ribbon from old video cassettes to tie around my newspaper wrapped gifts. The shiny, black "ribbon" looks great with the black and white newspaper. I also use this to wrap bottles of wine, tying the cartridge ribbon around the neck of the bottle.

In addition, when I receive brown packing paper inside the boxes of mailed packages, I save the paper and have my children stamp Christmas images using cutout sponges (like stars, Christmas trees, snowmen, etc) that are dipped into paint onto the paper. The grandparents love getting gifts wrapped in their grandchildren's "artwork", and it's entirely reused paper!

For small packages, I photo copy one on my kindergartner's pieces of artwork onto recycled computer scratch paper and wrap the package with this.

My best friend has always wrapped my gifts in magazine pages. Glossy, stylish, and sometimes very funny! I usually just tell my friends to just close their eyes and open their hands. Eyelids make great wrapping paper too.

I like to use old posters for wrapping paper, i.e. if I have gotten them as freebies.
