Rechargable Batteries vs. Disposables

Many claim that rechargeable batteries are a better solution than alkaline, but are rechargeable batteries really worth the extra money, either for us or for the planet?
"Although one company claims their batteries keep going and going and going…the truth is your batteries will eventually run out. After powering our remote controls, tape recorders and electric shavers, the average person will throw away eight batteries this year, on average. But by switching to rechargeable batteries, you’ll save money and take advantage of 'renewable energy.'"
Reasons why rechargeable batteries are better
1. You Save Money over Time
It may seem cheaper to buy a standard pack of alkaline batteries, but making the switch to rechargeables will cut down on your spending over time. Despite the initial price tag ($40 for a typical charger and batteries), rechargeable batteries can last up to 1,000 charges (even longer if stored in the fridge), Depending on how often you use them and for what, they can save you an average of about $80 a year.
2. Better for the Environment
In a landfill, almost all batteries release harmful metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium into the environment. The good news is rechargeable batteries are surprisingly easy to recycle. And, because rechargeable batteries are meant to bee recharged and reused many times, they contribute significantly less waste to landfills.
3. Know Your Options
There are three main types of rechargeable batteries. While all three are better than disposables, the ones you choose still make a difference, both to the planet and to your wallet.
- Nickel cadmium batteries (NiCd) are known for their long life but lower voltage potential.
- Nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH) have higher voltage that the NiCd, but require more charges.
- Lithium-ion batteries, the best option, are more expensive than the other two, but stores more energy and lasts longer between charges. They’re perfect for battery-operated tools and they’re better for the environment because they don’t contain harmful toxins. And since lithium is a natural metal, it is available in great quantities.

I always buy rechargables now...
Why doesn't IKEA (charging people for bags) carry any rechargeable batts??
Weak sauce!
It's really lame, but every store I know of carries disposables. Makes more money i guess.

That's a really good question Ken - I do not have an answer. My GUESS (it's only a guess) is that the whole charm of IKEA is that every time you look at a price tag you are pleasantly surprised. Since rechargeables are... more »

well, if people are using that many batteries, they'll actually save a lot more later than upfront =) more »

True. You could probably say the same thing about the crappy $20 coffee table i bought from ikea that broke in 6 months. Had i spent $100 and gotten a decent coffee table in the first place, i would still have it. It... more »
