Standard fall-back milk sub
Rice milk always tastes a bit watery -- it never completely convinces that it's more substantial than, well as another reviewer put it - a great source of carbohydrates. I don't drink cow or soy milk - my body rejects both.
Rice milk is probably 3rd place, behind almond and hemp milk, as a beverage of choice. I like to use unsweetened rice milk for mashed potatoes -- it has a good neutral flavor that works pretty well in the potatoes.
The packaging is a nightmare -- that stuff is totally not recyclable. Making your own rice milk is pretty easy -- it's about the same as making almond milk, maybe a bit easier because you don't need to use a blender.
The first time I had rice milk was when I lived in Mexico City - a friend just boiled water, added rice, let it steep and then put it in the fridge. He would just strain off the milky water and add more hot water for another batch. Add cinnamon and nutmeg and you have horchata!
Here's a big list of rice milk recipes -- find one that works for you, ditch the packaging and preservatives:

Not from cows, but not worth drinking, either
When I wanted to find a way for my family to eat less dairy, I bought some Rice Dream and failed utterly to see the point.
Rice milk is a great source of simple carbohydrates - period. It contains almost no calcium or protein. Rice Dream now offers versions that have been artificially "fortified", but I'd still call these some pretty empty calories.

Could be better... maybe?
6/13: It's actually not as bad now that I've had it a couple more times. No more than 3 stars though, still weird! Next project: water instead of milk, with cereal.

Old review:
This Rice Dream stuff is alright, but weird. I certainly wouldn't buy it again. Sometimes, I have to put my foot down and say that taste is just as important as ingredients and origin.
This stuff might as well be the water that I wash my own organic brown rice with, and some veggie oil and sugar added. I really don't see the attraction. I do think it's a fine product, but not for me. I tried to like it but i don't.
Three stars for effort.

I love drinking Rice Dream with chocolate desserts
I have to say that my favorite way to have Rice Dream is with a chocolate dessert, you know, in a glass. It's delicious, though a little bit sweet for my tastes, so I hardly ever drink it, though there was a time when I had it all the time. Originally dreamed up by Robert Nissenbaum in St. Louis, MO, Rice Dream is a product that has taken into consideration the delicate balance and questions around health and diet and nutrition. Now part of the Hain Celestial company, it's still a great product that contains only the finest organic ingredients. Kids love it and there are also some rockin' ice creams and ice cream bars made by Rice Dream. I definitely prefer the plain kind as the other flavors are too sweet for my tastes.

great tasting, and more sustainable milk
In the last couple of years, I started trying alternatives to regular milk. I have high cholesterol so finding non-animal based alternatives is important to me. I've tried soy milk in my lattes and started buying the boxed soy milk until I heard from a coworker that soy milk is actually not that good for you. I'm trying rice milk now and really like the taste, better than regular and soy milk. I like how it's not heavy, yet still feels nourishing and goes really well with my organic peace cereal. Does anyone know if there are any reasons not to drink rice milk?

Rice Dream
I love the Rice Dream brand of rice milk. It is my favorite because it has the right consistency, not too think, not too thin. It has a great taste and I love to use it in my cereal and for shakes. I highly recommend it to everyone who wants an alternative to the animal milk products out there. Enjoy! Got Rice Milk?

I like using rice dream for making mashed potatoes -- I also use almond milk but rice milk seems to give a different taste that works better in mashers. Never drink the stuff straight, though. more »
