Better than horrible...

If you do have a large family and/or need to haul around stuff for weekend activities or work, I can't argue that this vehicle is pretty sweet. Nothing says luxury and quality like Lexus.

But really, good for the environment? This vehicle is rated 27 (or 26 for 4WD) mpg city / 24 mpg hwy. Yes, it's better than a non-hybrid SUV, but it's still pretty terrible.

And it's not the most fuel efficient hybrid SUV. Ford Escape 2WD Hybrid, Mazda Tribute hybrid, and Mercury Mariner hybrid are all 34/30 mpg. That's 20% more fuel efficient than the Lexus RX. No, they're not as nice as a Lexus but this is Sustain Lane so I'm focusing on fuel economy.

If you really want to make an impact, buy a more fuel efficent SUV or crossover. The automakers are scaling back production of large SUVs due to lack of demand. Now that's progress.

Heavenly for Hypermilers

Love my new RX 400h. After years of filling the tank on my Yukon Denali twice a week, I now smile and wave as I pass by the cars lined up to buy gas at Costco. Even with the smaller gas tank in my RX, I get more than double the miles per gallon and therefore fill up only about every 10 days. I admit that I am a hypermiler, but with gas prices like these, why wouldn't you be? Also, despite calling for the highest grade gas, the Lexus salesperson told me the car does fine with regular gas.

In addition to great gas mileage, the car drives like a dream. Driving on battery rather than gas is smoother and quieter. In fact, the drawback to these cars is that they are so quiet, pedestrians don't hear them and, therefore, have a tendency to walk in front of them. So if you buy this car, be wary of people who listen, rather than watch, for oncoming traffic.
