There is more to the story. Sewage treatment plants can only safely remove toilet paper from the sewage stream. Items like tampons and applicators that are not dispersable may clog filtration screens and cause overflows of raw sewage from these facilities. From here, flushed items flow to the sea and clutter our beaches. In the US, beach cleaning efforts by Beach Watch report an average of 14 tampons per beach kilometer.
