Very Veg Friendly!

Saul's is a fairly non-veg restaurant but they are pretty good about working with veg needs. The service can be a bit sketchy - servers are inconsistent and inattentive (almost like Santa Cruz!)

If you're vegan, there are so many better options in the area - Juice Bar Coop, Cha-Ya, Cafe Gratitude - all within walking distance from Saul's if you find that their menu doesn't suit your diet.

They do have an amazing (not vegan) dessert case though - it breaks my heart that I can't eat their cheesecake anymore.

The best deli in the bay area is also a sustainable business

This is by far the best deli in the bay area, and if anyone finds something remotely close please let me know.

The chicken soup is the best I had with the exception of my mother's (and grandmother, and my aunts, you get the idea).
Tuna salad is also the best I had in the bay area. It is perfect. Chopped liver, smoked fish. Actually I never had anything that was not outstanding. Served on Acme bread that is specially prepared for Saul's.

Every trip I do to Berkeley I have to stop there. I wish there was something like that in San Francisco. So many good restaurants in the city and no one decent deli.

The prices are not cheap, but also not expensive, considering the high quality of preparation and ingredients.

I am cheap on stars, I don't give 5 starts without good reason. This one is a solid 5.

Sustainable, healthy deli experience! A big restaurant with a very nice sense of community

Until I found this place, I thought deli foods and sustainability/health were a contradiction. But here you can get those mile-high pastrami and corned beef sandwiches made with Niman Ranch beef (humanely, sustainably and locally raised) on Acme rye (organic and local). The chicken they use for the Matzo Ball soup, chopped chicken liver sandwiches, roast chicken and liver and onions is made with Fulton Valley (organic or free range, hormone and antibiotic free). Their turkey is Diestel (local, natural) and every Thursday Riverdog farms (organic, local) delivers seasonal vegetables, and the chefs plan their menus accordingly! (Riverdog has a stand at the Thursday farmer's market right outside Saul's doors, and combines the trip, minimizing emissions!) Of course, they serve fair trade, organic coffee. And the strong sense of community - chatty regulars, owners and managers - would make environmental theorist Bill McKibben proud.
