In California anyway pedestrians have the right of way at corners and crosswalks.
As a pedestrian you have to act like you're not wanting to cross for a car to legally keep going. If you're not REALLY in a hurry, why not let the cars keep going and wait till it's clear to go?
Imagine how much gas you'll save from the cars not having to slow down to a stop and rev up again.
