From the city's press release:
"Working to support the city’s growing number of bicyclists, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will create on-street bicycle parking in neighborhoods around Seattle. With a goal of having one to two per neighborhood, the department will install these unique bike facilities at three locations starting next week."
This is quite logical -- two car parking spaces can hold 25 bicycles which Stimulus Bike asserts is more people than even two large minivans can hold.
That the city is doing this is significant in that the local economy (main street shops that James Kunstler hustles) will benefit greatly, people will feel more supported to actually bicycle (instead of drive) to work, to go shopping or on errands, and the project has ultra-low capital costs. It doesn't hurt that Seattle is relatively well off to begin with, but this can (and should) be done in just about every American city.
And it ought to be done starting this spring. All together now!
