solar security light batteries always die too soon

I've purchased several different solar powered security lights, and I had the batteries die pretty quickly on both. while they are great in concept, in that you don't need to wire the house, etc for them and just hook up the solar panel on the roof, they only work for about 6-8 months consistently. It seems like a waste then to dispose of the batteries and buy new ones. Am I helping or hurting with this kind of battery churn.
