The Frey syrah has a nice, lush taste without being over the top -- combined with a low price point to make it an excellent table wine in my book.
You may not realize that not all wine or beer is actually vegetarian. Fining agents derived from animal products such as gelatin, lard and Isinglass (derived from fish guts) have been used for centuries to "fine" beer and wine. It is put into a cask and as it cools and settles, it takes sediment and yeast and makes the beverage more clear.
Embarrassingly, I first learned about this in the December 2006 issue of Vegetarian News -- a representative from Frey's was interviewed and the quote is something like "Really fine wines don't need to be fined."
Frey's makes really tasty table wine but I haven't seen a huge selection of their wines in my local Whole Foods. I'm going to plan a trip to Mendocino to do a tasting and will post the results here.

Tasting this wine was like licking a pair of American Apparel Terry Cloth running shorts - in a good way (not that I've ever tried that).
Of the three Frey wines I've tried, hats off to the Syrah. It's velvety and has a nice round bouquet.
The length begins with a big, velvety fruitiness and ends with blueberry.
The Syrah, to me, was nothing special. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever had, yet I don't think I was jumping up and down for a refill either. That being, sulfite-free and local NorCal grown, it is definitely drinkable.

Of the Frey wines I've tried, this Syrah was the best. The wine had a deep almost purple color. The label says there are flavors of plum and black cherry. I was definitely able to taste the black cherry. The wine was heavy on the tongue, and smooth going down. Syrah is a hit or miss wine for me, and this hit, but not with a baseball bat, maybe just a twig. I would recomend this wine, but I also it's possible to find a better inexpensive organic wine for $13.

Frey Vineyards 2006 Syrah is a delicious sulfite-free organic wine. Of the Syrahs I have tried, this is up there at the top of the list. The price is good too and the vineyards are on the the North Coast of California, so its also a great local option!

I just cannot complain. Its a simple Syrah. The aroma was not strong, per say, but enticing nonetheless. This Syrah may not be the best dinner wine for it is on the lighter side. I see it more so as a cheese, bread and grapes kind of companion. It rolled gently across my palate, went down smooth, and it had a subtle finish. Its a wine that I savored and that allowed me to get back to work prior to my tasting. None of this knocking me off of my feet, or putting me to sleep kind of wine. A breezy Syrah that I would not turn down. If you like an intense aroma, flavor and finish, this may not be your top choice, but I'm sure you won't go wrong with the Frey Syrah.
