Great gift

I did tons of research on carbon offset companies in both the US and abroad (UK, EU, Canada) and found Terrapass to be the most userfriendly, especially for gift giving. I was going to use the Carbon Neutral Company, which is probably the best in terms of effectiveness, transparency, etc, but not user friendly in a gift-giving sense. It is geared toward investors or individuals who are offsetting their own use -- and the governance is top notch. However TerraPass allowed me to calculate the flights of my significant other, who travels often, and for the holidays I offset two flights to come visit me! So it was really cute...and TerraPass is pretty transparent, and sends a newsletter every week or so.

Good, but not the best

I really do appreciate how visible Terrapass is and how it's been partnering with organizations like Expedia.com and Enterprise rental cars. I think any work towards offsetting carbon emissions and making it easy and accessible is really fantastic. I always hesitate with for-profit companies, though, because I never know how honest their intentions are. Also, I believe there are other, more transparent carbon offsetting options.

Regardless, the fact that Terrapass is so accessible and so user-friendly, not to mention the fact that it offers so many offset options (driving, flying, home, college), warrants the 4-star rating. Because, really, any time there's a company working to make this world better, they deserve the credit.

It's nice to know your car's emissions are offset

Terrapass has been offsetting my miles since I bought my new Prius last year. And while it has fewer emissions, I know my miles are completely offset. You just tell Terrapass how many miles you drive per year and they offset it by funding project like wind energy and landfill gas capture. It's a great feeling to know that while I'm driving, net net I'm still doing something good.

Great idea

I got a TerraPass for both my vehicle and my home; I think it is a great way to make a contribution to the earth and offset some things we just can't do anything else about. (Not that I am an energy hog, I drive a hybrid and live on a sustainable farm, so call me a green junkie.) The only thing I was disappointed in is when they sent me my welcome package, they packed it with styrofoam peanuts (not the biodegradable kind). Otherwise, I find them right on the mark.

Kyoto for your Kar

Terrapass is your opportunity to do the right thing for your car/truck/suv/hybrid by impacting the global environment. Simply put, you purchase a "Terrapass" decal. The amount of the decal is based upon the estimated carbon footprint of your vehicle (the calculator is on the Terrpass website). Terrapass invests those funds in clean energy projects and reduces overall carbon production.
We've used Terrapass for years, and have turned many others on to the company. We can highly recommend the quality and service of the company.
There are some environmental downsides. First, this won't help your local environment, just the global. Second, your vehicle emits more than carbon dioxide. Third, you'll continue to use gasoline at the low mpg that the US allows.
But few people can go out today and by a hybrid or spend the money to convert to an EV. Terrapass gives you the opportunity to do the right thing NOW. And in the future, when you're ready to buy the hybrid, do it. I did.

Drive Less- but TerraPass the rest

This is a truly novel market-driven approach to reducing overall carbon emissions worldwide. Consumers can make up for carbon dioxide created by their vehicles. While the best approach is to individually reduce consumption, TerraPass provides an option for automobile users to buy reductions (thereby offsetting the use of their automobiles) pollutants from industrials sources. Kudos for giving us immediate options to reduce our carbon footprints!

Great once you finally understand what it is

This is a cool thing where you can buy a pass for your vehicle to offset its carbon emissions for a year. You enter your vehicle's information, and I think some info about your driving habits, and it tells you how many pounds of CO2 you will emit from your car in a year. You then buy a TerraPass for that many pounds of CO2, and the money you pay goes to subsidize the production of an equivalent amount of alternative energy, offsetting your carbon emissions. It is kind of tough to wrap your mind around at first, but once I did I saw that it's a neat thing to do, and makes a great gift, especially for your Hummer-driving friend, if you're willing to shell out a few extra bucks!

I love my Terrapass!

I found out about Terrapass almost by accident when surfing the internet, and I believe that it is an excellent program. Even though I drive a car fueled by biodiesel, offsetting the carbon emissions of my car through the Terrapass program is an easy and effective way to further reduce my carbon footprint. People ask me about the decal on my car all the time and love to hear about the program. Many times the reason people don't make environmentally friendly decisions is because it requires effort, but in this case Terrapass does all the work! I also enjoy that it is 3rd party audited to ensure that the carbon they say they are removing from the atmosphere happens!

With Terrpass you can offset all the CO2 produced by driving your car for a small amount ($30-50/year). You contribute in your own small way to reducing global warming! They invest in renewable energy like wind, biogas (methane) projects which offset the same amount of CO2 produced by your car.
