Our Devitalized Diet and the American Food Culture
Simontacchi's bottom-line warning in her book is that our food is literally driving us crazy. She discusses what has happened to our American food culture. If we want to be healthy, we must stop financing the fast-food, take-out, frozen food, packaged food and junk food industries with our consumer dollars! A Gallop poll, when surveying pollsters during a single evening, way back in 1989, found that 50% surveyed were dining of take-out, frozen or packaged foods. Imagine how much higher this figure is today!
Our cognitive function and brain chemistry, hormones, moods, emotions, behaviors, energy, and immune system are starved, altered, even poisoned to death by foods that are nutrient-deficient or laced with a cocktail of ingredients, binders and fillers that are toxic to our bodies, especially our brains. If we haven't got ours brain, we haven't got anything at all!
Chapter 6, "Feeding the Adult Brain" is a must-read for those caffeine-dependent, those that substitute natural or organic sugars with aspartame, those on a low-fat diet, and on a meal-replacement program.
The Crazy Makers ends on a high note of optimism about our body's ability to respond to positive dietary changes. The author prescribes a healthy approach with simple steps to improve nutrition. I am in the midst of experiencing a phenomenal change in body, as a positive response to the dietary changes I have made in the past several months! You've got to love a book that ends on an upbeat note...a chapter for revitalizing your diet with great recipes for the whole family, with "Deep, Dark Delicious Chocolate Pudding" for dessert!
