The benefits of eating locally are obvious, even on the surface, and will become more so to anyone who visits this website.
With all due respect, though - I don't want to! The day I volunteer for another challenge is a long way off. I've got a limited budget, family issues, client issues (how can everyone in the world like a website except the person who gets to say yes or no?), a car that needs an oil change, the rose bushes are dying for lack of water, don't ask about the state of my kitchen floor. Finding out how far a head of lettuce has traveled before I can buy it is quite simply off the chart.
I do what works for me - I buy local when I see the choice and organic when I can afford it.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just that it isn't going to happen.

Ecotrust introduced The Eat Local Challenge back in 2005, along with Portland Farmers Market, Portland Chapter of the Chefs Collaborative, Sauvie Island Organics, Celilo Group Media, People’s Farmers Market and Plate & Pitchfork, with financial support from New Seasons Market, Hot Lips Pizza, Burgerville and Shorebank Pacific.
I heard of this challenge, but didn't know the details. When I visited the website, I discovered that it's a week long challenge. A downloadable scorecard helps you track your progress, as your commit to: (1) spend 10% of your grocery budget on local food that's grown within a 100-mile radius of wherever your home; (2) try one new fruit or vegetable each day; (3) preserve seasonal produce and foods to enjoy year round; (4) send Ecotrust completed scorecard or submit story about eating locally.
Well, I don't live in Portland, and odds are you don't either, but why not take The Challenge wherever you are, and start your own Eat Local Challenge!
