Less is more

Not everyone can live like a minimalist, but Mies' motto 'less is more' holds meaning on so many levels. There is a Micro House trend, yet it is not affordable for most people, at $230/sf. However the Small House Society promotes living in smaller spaces, nothing as extreme as the micro houses, but "notes that even less-extreme scaled-back homes help foster a lifestyle of using all kinds of resources more mindfully. People who make smaller living spaces work often end up having more time and money for other areas of life such as marriage, family, education, fitness and career." Not to mention the cost savings of living in a smaller space that is more energy efficient, and all of the environmental savings on materials, and resources. A smaller house is obviously more ecological. But Americans need to learn how to live with less things and in less space. It's easy to see these smaller spaces working when you visit abroad. Hopefully these trends can rid of us the gluttonous mcmansions of our past.
