The 3 Ps

People, Planet, Profits is an easy way to remember the triple bottom line. It's clear that companies can still be profitable while adopting sustainable practices and by being socially responsible. These are the types of companies I want to support, just like the LOHAS demographic. From Wikipedia "The concept of TBL demands that a company's responsibility be to 'stakeholders' rather than shareholders. In this case, 'stakeholders' refers to anyone who is influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the actions of the firm. According to the stakeholder theory, the business entity should be used as a vehicle for coordinating stakeholder interests, instead of maximizing shareholder(owner) profit." The arguments against this are interesting, however as green becomes more and more mainstream, all companies will be faced with joining the crowd or being left behind. Taking this one step further apparently is the B Corporation Movement, find out more at http://bcorporation.net

Achieving Economic, Social and Environmental Success

A few months ago, I participant in an environmental focus group. We were asked if we knew what the "triple bottom line" was. I don't recall any of us being able to answer the question successfully, so I went in search of a book, and found "The Triple Bottom Line: How Today's Best-Run Companies Are Achieving Economic, Social and Environmental Success -- and How You Can Too", a comprehensive 320-page hardcover devoted to corporate response to our growing environmental needs, sustainability and accountablility. An important read.

For those that aren't going to buy this book, here's what triple bottom line is in a nutshell, courtesy of www.sustainability.com: "The term is used to capture the whole set of values, issues and processes that companies must address in order to minimize any harm resulting from their activities and to create economic, social and environmental value...."
