Trader Joe's certainly does have a lot of great, and often exotic foods, but it's understandable how their frivolous use of plastic would be a turn off to their eco-conscious shoppers. Still, I don't think one should avoid shopping there because we simply have to consider our options. Certainly Trader Joe's can not compare to farmer's markets or other small neighborhood grocery stores in terms of sustainability. However, Ellis Jones' "The Better World Shopping Guide" gives TJ's an A-, the only supermarket scoring higher being Whole Foods with an A. They may use an excess amount of plastic, but is it any more than other modern supermarkets? For many people, I'd imagine that Trader Joe's would be their most feasible option for buying affordable organic, fair trade grocery items... and in comparison to the other supermarkets around today, I don't think TJ's is as big of a villain as some might make it seem.
*note: they've recently replaced their plastic bags with biodegradable ones!

Yeah, they have awesome food. But they are a plastic packaging nightmare. It's almost impossible to find anything at Trader Joe's that's not packaged in plastic. They will tell you that they use biodegradable PLA, but first of all, PLA is not technically biodegradable, and second of all, TJ's only uses it for a few produce items. All the salads, sandwiches, meats, cheeses, frozen foods, you name it, come in petro-plastic. Believe it or not, I saw a shrink-wrapped cucumber at TJ's yesterday. What would possibly be the point of shrink-wrapping a freakin' cucumber?
This is NOT a sustainable business practice, and as it operates now, Trader Joe's is not a sustainable business. Which is sad for me because like I said, they do have some wicked good food.
