I finally figured out a way to put Trader Joe's in my radar, having moved to new neighborhood with one close by. And, I love Trader Joe's. But, I can't shop there anymore. I don't care how much you tell me their this is good and their that is good, until they stop wrapping all the produce in plastic, importing it from the four corners of the world, selling 2 buck Chuck (have you read about the business practices and wine making procedures of the parent company and its president?), and promoting all that heavily packaged stuff, all the while purporting to be green, I just can't do it. Add to that they are non union (and don't give me the whole "oh they pay really well" spiel). I'm sad about that, because I believed the hype, the cute little chalk boards, the "persona" of simple Trader Joe, but I just can't do it.

I have had the pleasure of shopping at TRADER JOE'S for more than 30 years. I have always appreciated the low prices and the selection of food, produce and wine. I really like the fact that they continue to grow and add more locations, to make it convinient for me to shop almost everywhere I travel. The slant on healthier food has been the real reason why I started shopping T.J.'s in the first place. Now, a lot of the products for sale there are the ones my family are served and my boys grew up to really love. I can purchase a loaf of the same bread at T.J.'s, that Whole Foods sells for at least $1.00 more. I am a comparison shopper and NOBODY can touch their prices and availability. Anyone who says other food chains are a better value, hasn't shopped T.J.'s! Oh, and by the way my husband is a Holistic Doctor and a Doctor of Nutrition. Our whole family lives on zero sugar added to foods and healthy food only. I can shop with confidence at T.J.'s because they offer such a great selection of CLEAN FOOD! Pam Krause
I love Trader Joe's and their products. They have good quality and decent prices - except produce which I don't find that fresh. I also agree with the concerns of excessive packaging particularly on the produce section. This needs to improve. I would also love that they would have more locations. I end up getting things in other stores just because they are more convenient.

Yeah, they have awesome food. But they are a plastic packaging nightmare. It's almost impossible to find anything at Trader Joe's that's not packaged in plastic. They will tell you that they use biodegradable PLA, but first of all, PLA is not technically biodegradable, and second of all, TJ's only uses it for a few produce items. All the salads, sandwiches, meats, cheeses, frozen foods, you name it, come in petro-plastic. Believe it or not, I saw a shrink-wrapped cucumber at TJ's yesterday. What would possibly be the point of shrink-wrapping a freakin' cucumber?
This is NOT a sustainable business practice, and as it operates now, Trader Joe's is not a sustainable business. Which is sad for me because like I said, they do have some wicked good food.

I wrote Trader Joe's in Jan. 2009 about this problem. You can see the letter at http://tippecanoegreen.blogspot.com/2009/01/new-year-means-more-letter-writing.html. They replied that they evaluate the packaging for... more »

I've sent them emails about packaging too. Their tea bags are individually wrapped in plastic instead of paper like Lipton or Tetley tea bags. I think it's because everything travels from CA -- they don't sell local... more »

Trader Joe's is a fantastic chain of stores. They continue to set the bar for oraganic and sustainable product selection and their prices are great too. Excellent job Trader Joe's.

This is the only store that my family goes grocery shopping. They have multiple different kinds of foods from veggies to baked goods. I suggest to any one who needs a good grocery store to shop there. Their prices are just as cheap as the typical grocery stores.
