Shopping for shoes that are both sustainably produced and which are not derived from animal products is not easy to do locally. Unless I end up at Payless shoes where I can buy cheap shoes made in China out of dubious materials, I have to look online for my shoe needs.
My first Vegetarian Shoes were the "Jen Boot." While most Vegetarian Shoes are true to size, this model ran a bit small and I ended up with a size 42 and usually wear a 40. This boot lasted me nearly 2 years -- before wear points started to pull apart at the back of the heel and the zipper would slide down on its own. I added insoles to these since I had to get a slightly bigger size and they fit like a dream.
I also had the Spider Shoe -- a darling sneaker with a super grippy, flexible sole that felt like a slipper. There wasn't a lot of arch support so people with sensitive feet might add insoles. Those shoes lasted about a year and a half -- then stitching started to wear and the faux suede started to look a bit rubbed off (like real suede does).
My most recent Vegetarian shoes are the Spider XT Walking Shoes -- they are very nice charcoal & black and fit very well. The shoelaces are a bit long but I imagine I'll end up trimming them soon.
Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of Vegetarian Shoes -- it's good to know that the shoes are produced using sustainable materials. I'd be even happier if they offered an "end of life" program so I could send my shoes back for recycling!
