A spiffy messenger bag that happens to be made of recycled plastic bottles.
I recently got this messenger bag that is made almost entirely out of recycled plastic bottles! They let you know exactly what a difference you made, detailing out the number of bottles that went into making it, how much energy was saved as compared to making it from new, petroleum based materials, and then to really drive the point home, how many hours the average laptop would run on that amount of energy. In this case 184 hours! Carbon offsets are nice, but this really makes real how my choices are making a difference.
Even if this messenger bag wasn't made from recycled PET, I'd probably get this, as it's nicely thought out in terms of both style and function. Lots of pockets for different size things, which I find useful so I don't confuse what's where when you're looking for what you want. I like the magnetic buttons for fast opening/closing, rather then having to click, button or zip things open/shut. Kind of like the Macbook in it's simplicity of closure.
The vertical orientation is convenient for walking through crowded cafes, trains and buses, since you're not as wide as the normal horizontal bag. And somehow having my things stored this way (versus horizontal) feels more natural, secure to me, like my things won't get roughed up, turning around while I carry them. I know that might now make sense if you don't have this bag yet. So I recommend you check it out yourself!
My Macbook fits nicely in the special padded compartment for it. and my favorite part of this bag? On the bag are a series of three diagonal lines crossing each other, and the intersection of two is an odd sized extra pocket! Totally unnecessary, but that somehow makes it even more endearing.
I checked out the company's website, and they really seem committed to this, with this interesting green glossary they created. Food for thought indeed.
