For anyone trying to get rid of smoke odors, setting a few bowls of vinegar out does seem to help absorb some of the smell. Of course the vinegar has an odor of its own, but once you toss it, you lose a LOT of the smoke smell.
Also, if you've ever discovered fruit flies in the kitchen, a paper funnel into a cup of vinegar will do the trick. They can't resist the stuff then get stuck within the funnel.

While I can see few foods that can't be improved with vinegar (fish & chips, salads, chimichurri, pickles, etc), the smell is too sour for the amount of cleaning my house requires. And mixed with baking soda, it's as effective as salt water. Baking soda is a base, vinegar is an acid. An acid + base reaction always yields a salt and water. So all the natural sites that recommend mixing the 2, they are misguided.

It's a miracle cleaning product. Use it with newspapers for cleaning glass, or for de-scaling kettles, mix it with baking soda to scrub pots and pans. I keep a couple of spray bottles around the house for general cleaning. I also spray my shower curtains after a bath to kill mildew before it takes root.

It also removes bacteria from your fresh produce....just mix with water and spray it on. The television news said studies show it works better than store bought veggie wash or the scrub brush method for killing bacteria... more »
