C'mon everyone - lets get past bottled water. Please.
I will admit that in my younger days, whenever I could afford to buy this water (seriously, it costs like 3 dollars a bottle) I would drink it. And I admit that even now I think it tastes better than any other tap or bottled water I've tried (eat your heart out Evian).
All that being said, this is even more unsustainable than Nestle bottling tap water and selling it (wait, that wasn't unsustainable, just morally reprehensible). This water has to come ALL THE WAY FROM FIJI. That is almost as far away from the US as you can get. I give Fiji props for their sustainability initiatives (you will notice I did give them two stars instead of one) but it's still not worth it. Please please please buy a water bottle and use it.

Hey - didn't you get the memo? Only about 12-14% of all these plastic water bottles are actually recycled. That means that millions and millions of these go to the landfill every day.
If that doesn't get you steamed on the topic of bottled water, think about the costs in exporting water from a limited aquifer in Fiji to the rest of the world. Do you really think that aquifer is going to have water in it forever? Do you really think that those people on a distant, dry rock in the middle of the ocean don't need that water?
Regardless of common perception, most islands out in the middle of the Pacific have very little fresh water or precipitation. Kauai may have the most rainfall of any place on earth in the Waimea Canyon, but that is the exception rather than the rule.
Get a nice stainless steel reusable water bottle and drink water from your kitchen sink. Get a filter if you don't like the taste but please don't buy Fiji water.

a good article on the complicated issues surrounding bottled water, local economies, business and our unfortunate appetite for excess and consumption: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/117/features-message-in-a-bottle.html

i recently had a conversation with a good friend of mine about bottled water. she was told once that fiji water has a less toxic bottle, and that proceeds to go funding education in fiji. ummm, what?? if this were true, why wouldn't they promote that on their website??!! this is complete crap and we need to stop fooling ourselves that this is a luxury product.
purchase a kleen kanteen, fill it with your tap or filtered water from the tap, and save yourself the $2.
FYI - Last year, American's spent $14 Billion dollars in bottled water... how's that for pathetic.

It's just tap water in a bottle. Go buy a glass or recycled plastic water bottle and refill it before leaving the house each day. Not only will you save the planet, but you'll save tons of money too! Forget bottled water.

My people... Fiji is the birthplace of my parents & grandparents and is also one of the main Indian diasporas. And my brethren are damn pissed that some company is sucking up their pure artesian water to ship across the pacific! What a stupid idea! Boo hoo... poo poo pee on Fiji Water. It's all about drinking home brewed beer, anyways! Organic of course.

What a joke, have your water imported from half way around the world. Did you know that a liter of water weighs over 2 pounds? I wish this company would go out of business, or at least lose its marketspeak of remote artesian aquifer superiority.
I wonder how much they're polluting by way of transportation and shipping alone, and of course eventually it's going to affect everyone, and Fiji will no longer be a pure, untouched virgin paradise for water as they so adamantly explain. Give me a break! Unless you're a South Pacific Islander, it just makes no sense to drink this. My question: Who's paying for it?
I especially get a kick out of the brand's attempt to convince you that "remote" is just better, as opposed to local. These guys should be put out of business.

Maybe it should appear in The Unsustainables!! By the way, I read that Aquafina is Philadelphia tap water, and Dasani is Bronx tap water. (or vice-versa) Why not skip the expensive, plastic-tasting water and tote around your own tap water? Tastes fine to me! I don't understand why anyone would pay unreasonable fees just to drink this essential fluid. I never buy Costco bottled water--lame! I really dislike how water fountains are disappearing from public spaces, too. For example, Union City BART station.
There's a good article in the 2007 Green issue of Vanity Fair on the topic of privatized water and the French conglomerate Veolia. Elsewhere, I read that the US is very interested in Central American countries as fresh water sources. (odd?)
Positive action: buy a Klean Kanteen or better yet, a SIGG bottle. pour in your filtered tap nectar.

Fiji water is a classic example of an unsustainable product. It doesn't make any sense to burn thousands of gallons of fuel in order to ship bottled water accross the pacific, especially when there are more local options available. Bottled water in general is an unsustainable product. Tap water is just as good for you in most cases, and there are more regulations regarding tap water than bottled water. I understand the need to stay hydrated, and water is always a better choice than a sweetened beverage. If you have a choice go for the water that was bottled nearby.
