WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The world's wetlands, threatened by development, dehydration and climate change, could release a planet-warming "carbon bomb" if they are destroyed, ecological scientists said on Sunday.

Wetlands are so important to the biodiversity of earth in almost every way shape and form. They house millions of species, help to control water and ground pollution, and serve as breakwaters against some of the worst storms such as Hurricane Katrina. Now apparently we are becoming aware that they house 20% of the world carbon dioxide. TWENTY PERCENT! Why can't we and the wetlands just get along?
