What is Lurking in Your Countertop?

Granite counter tops can contain dangerous levels of uranium
Why does everything need to have a downside? In recent years, the popularity of granite as a countertop material has surged. The reason for this is that granite will not harbor all the nasties that wooden butcher block countertops will. Especially in your kitchen, where countertops are often used as a prep area, this meant that bacteria, mold, fungus and all that other stuff was much more easily held at bay, making your kitchen safer for baby, mama, and anyone else who happened to be there. Good news right?
Apparently not. As the demand for granite countertops has increased, it has started to be mined from quarries which have large levels of radioactive uranium! Weee! Essentially, this means that if you own granite countertops, there is a good chance that they are actually radioactive. On the bright side, this means you probably wont need a microwave anymore.
So what do we do now? I vote for solid concrete countertops. Or marble. Or diamond. Yea, diamond countertops (conflict free of course). I like the sound of that.

There are many countertops made from recycled materials composites, a bunch listed here on sustainlane:

You don’t have to go as far as concrete to get a good surface, epoxies and other polymers can be equally as good for use, lighter, and less prone to cracking.
Basically almost all the "man made" materials are non porous. I have to say I never saw a full wood counter top, maybe I have to swing in higher circles :)
