Whitening your whites the natural way

As well as being a disinfectant, white vinegar can whiten your whites, remove stains and freshen laundry. Have you ever wondered how back in the olden days did those Italians get the wine and sauce stains off of their family heirloom white linens (which still today are white--not yellow)? Well, I'm not really sure, but I do the same as my Grandma Goldie did. I put my white linens (sheets, table clothes, unmentionables--all cotton) in a large pot of boiling water with white vinegar. It cleans off stains and makes them whiter. For red wine stains, I first treat the area with hydrogen peroxide and COLD water, then put it in the boiling water/vinegar mixture.

What is white vinegar, anyway?

Vinegars can be made by fermenting all kinds of stuff... but what is white vinegar made from? There are two types of white vinegar:

1. oxidizing a distilled alcohol.
2. solution of acetic acid and salt in water. Most commercial white vinegars are 5% acetic acid solutions. Acetic acid is a petroleum derived product.
3. acetous fermentation of alcohol made from grain (often maize) and water.

You may wonder - what does this mean? Well - a couple of things. Most commercially available white wine vinegar are chemically derived -- unless the label specifically says that it is derived from fermented grains. Pay attention to your products -- make sure you're buying something that is actually vinegar, not a cleaning product, for your salad.
