Great Movie

The movie was a fabulous expose of the NiMH / GM / Chevron scandal. I'm so glad this movie exists, it's such a useful tool in spreading information about electric cars. I show it to all of my friends and they get enticed. In my mind, there are only two appropriate introductions for the electric car. This movie, and the book "Two Cents Per Mile" by Nevres Cefo, which I recommend to all of my friends who liked the movie. Thank you Chris Paine, for putting the time into making such a helpful and illuminating movie.

Required Viewing

I completely agree. I had heard about this movie for a long time, but couldn't believe what I was seeing when I watched it. Americans have always had a love affair with the automobile and the owners of these cars dramatically demonstrated that love and outrage over the absolute insanity of the car companies who built and then destroyed this ecologically "smart" cars. This film should be shown in High School civic classes, so that kids, who are now wanting and about ready to join the car buying public can see what the American car companies did, in their greed and disregard of the public need. I have no sympathy for the financial ruin that the car companies now face (though I do have sympathy for their workers). They had every chance to take the lead in electric car technology, but they threw it away.

Who Kills Innovation?

You can't fake this story or claim it is an over-rated cry by a bunch of loony environmentalists.
This story about the rise and fall of an innovative electric car, is shocking, if not absurd in the light of our current car bailout plan.It should be required viewing for all US car manufacturers. Now.

Amazing Movie

This is one of those movies that just really made me want to DO SOMETHING. While watching this film, I actually got so angry that I got up and started pacing around the room. Not because of some crazy conspiracy involving the car companies and the oil companies. While I suppose it is possible (and the film does touch on it), I find it very unlikely. What seems much more likely is the point the film does a great job of hammering home: that the car companies were so worried about government telling them what kinds of cars they should make that they sabotaged their own projects to keep the status quo. GM was the only car company with a fully functional electric car at the time this legislation was being considered. Had they gone with it, they would have completely captured their market share, and made tons of money! Instead, they bit off their nose to spite their face. This movie is not about conspiracies, it is about all too true realities.

I took away one star because they spent so much time bashing hydrogen. This is kind of a wonky subject, but the fact of the matter is that since all the renewables need to split their funding from a common pool, competing technologies can sometimes spend as much time bashing each other as they do the oil and gas industries. I have no patience for this. Otherwise, still a great film.

Right Next to the Darwin Awards

"Who Killed the Electric Car" sits on the shelf in our movie library right next to the "Darwin Awards". It seems that the decision of the BIG car manufacturers to kill the electric car is biting them in their big b.... now. The Hummer is dead, and hundreds of thousands of people are now stuck with getting less than half of blue book when trying to refinance or trade in their gas guzzlers. The Electric Car has gone mainstream. Woo-Hoo! Even politicians like Indiana Senator Richard G. Lugar, are on the band wagon to reduce foreign oil dependence and taking a lead to support the development of alternative energy systems for automotive transportation. I believe we have a lot to look forward to in 2009, if Obama is elected the next President of the United States. I see us entering into a new renaissance period, a time of revival, where creative solutions, innovative design and technologies such as alternative energy and transportation will take a quantum leap in R&D and production.

Great expose' of GM (yet again)

I really enjoyed this movie. It shows an example of powerful interests doing what serves them, and not what is right.
In any case, while bicycling and walking are the best modes of transportation, electric cars are worth testing out, compared to the current global warming-, misery- and obesity-causing cars and trucks 80% of Americans toot around in every day of the week.

I'd like to see a documentary on what GM did to the Key Route streetcar line in the East Bay (trains formerly carried commuters over the old bay bridge) and similar lines around the country. There is probably no film footage of these American cities' light rail cars being junked and burned... or is there?

An interesting documentary.

Personnally I love the idea of the electric car. So after seeing this doc., I believe it. But in the other hand, it is kind of akward for me that a "documentary" filmmaker tells you what you should believe...
But this is a great documentary after all!
