Reviews of Whole Foods

Solid stand-by grocery store

Whole Foods is my main-stay grocery store -- when I can't get to Rainbow or to a farmer's market for produce, I end up buying stuff here. You have to be careful - buying all organic can mean you spend a lot more for organic produce flown in from Chile, so just skip it. Try to stick to locally available produce and you'll get better prices on organic.

Most Whole Foods have a pretty good bulk selection -- the 4th/Harrison location has most of what I need, but with a smaller selection of bulk herbs and teas than the Telegraph location. The Potrero Hill store has nothing in bulk -- keep in mind that they do tailor the grocery stores based on the size of the location and the store's expectations of the local demographic.

Not as sustainable as its reputaion

I do enjoy going to whole foods occasionally. But there are a few things that I think need to be pointed out.

There food is not always locally grown, and locally grown food is essential if you wish to try to eat as sustainable as possible, even more so than buying organic.

There also has been some concern that they haven't been posting warnings about mercury that could be in their sea food.

They do have labour issues, but I will just mention that they carry only a limited amount of Fair Trade products.

There is also very limited transparancys about GMO's. In fact, much of their food isn't organic.

Much of their foods will also show ingredients, but no information on nutrition.

I won't say don't shop there if you haven't been already, But I wouldn't use it as a place to do all of my shopping.

Whole Foods

I love Whole Foods, for certain things.

As a bargain hunter, I make buying organic here work for me, but it is a very selective process. As it is sooooo close to my work, I find myself here often, tempted by the hot lunch fare that ends up costing me more than a nice dinner out...

But the basics here are great- the baking supplies, chocolate, coffee, compostable picnic stuff at really good prices.

So why, then, must their organic produce make me want to turn and run for fear of bankruptcy?! I don't get it, and I know it probably won't change since it is a huge chain that doesn't necessarily get to set its own prices, but why the discrepancy when it comes to organic produce or hot foods versus everything else?

The moral of my story is this: go to Whole Foods for the basics, but beware, you're best bet for healthy greens is Rainbow where its still $.50 to $1 cheaper per lb.

price is the only problem, well, price and...distraction

I worked at Whole Foods in Seattle for a while and it was a great company to work for because everyone who worked there was so cool and many became my good friends. This particular location does the trick, though maneuvering through the aisles can be a little windy and it's easy for me to forget something, then have to retrace my steps back across the entire store, only to find something I didn't even know that I wanted on my way to that which I needed. Still, I think that Whole Foods' products are utterly superior to the likes of Trader Joe's and so they're worth that extra hit on the wallet. What we put into our bodies is of extreme importance. Whole Foods is also way more sensitive to packaging than Trader Joe's, who puts their vegetables in plastic packages. The problem with Whole Foods is that if I shop how I want to there I'll easily spend 4x what I would otherwise. Still, it's a great company and they've done wonders in helping to make available green and organic products.

superb grocery

I have shopped at Whole Foods from Texas to the west coast. They have consistent quality and great staff. I sense that they treat their staff well. Disclaimer: when I was in medical practice, their staff referred me medical clients (at no request from me!).

Whole Foods - A Great Alternative

If there is a Whole Foods Grocery store in your area, I highly recommend checking them out. They have great environmentally friendly, and organic alternatives to most of your house hold needs.

I personally shop there for meat, fruits/veggies, and other organic products. I also appreciate their options for household goods like trash bags made from recycled plastic, and non-toxic, environmentally friendlier cleaners.

They may not be a total replacement for your other grocery store, as they don't carry as many items, but they will provide you with most things you need.
