I've seen quite a few of these wind-up tools and I do own a flashlight. My first objection is that they all seem to be made in China. Can't we make them in the US? And they are all made of plastic. We're still using oil for everything. To top it all off, they, or at least mine, requires 30 windings and begins to dim before my dog has finished doing his business. I'm sure we can make better ones- better led lights, more efficient. After having used it in a power outage, I know how frustrating these little items can be. Where's the ol' American know-how?

These flashlights are truly great. I volunteer with the Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT), a grassroots, non-profit organization, that's currently building a school in a rural area of Tanzania in Africa and we love to give these flashlights to our students. The village has no electricity and a wind-up flashlight allows the students to study after dark (after they finish their household chores) - it is truly wonderful!
Of course, it works great in the US as well - no batteries to dispose of or buy!!!

There are a number of these types of flashlights now available in all sizes. I have a key-ring purse-size version, and a larger size I keep in my auto for emergencies. A really great new feature is the ability to recharge a cell phone (variety of adapters available). These are also available in quantity with an imprinted logo. My company can offer a quote if interested - 800-335-1829 MARCO Ideas Unlimited.

I got one of these wind-up flashlights for Christmas last year and I love it. It isn't exactly the same as the one shown in the picture but it's very similar. I just wind it up a few times, press the on button and three LED bulbs provide plenty of light. The light isn't bright enough to be used to see long distances at night but it works great to see a few feet around you. I get up earlier than my partner and so I have to get dressed in the dark. This little flashlight helps me every morning to avoid wearing blue socks with black pants.

A couple of weeks ago, I got this Sustainable Flashlight called The Illuminator. It does not work on batteries or electricity. All it needs for energy is a mechanical lever that generates energy and stores it for the LEDs (you have the option of using 1 or all 3 of them) and voila - you have bright light!! Its an amazing tool if you are on the move, an emergency etc. since it completely runs on human energy!!! A few spins might last you for hours!!! If you want more, spin more, that's all it takes!!! Highly recommend it.
