Why FSC certified wood is good

Of all of the truly important and sustainable green products we can support, it is odd to me that so little attention is given to Certified Wood, namely FSC certified wood. In terms of our environment, is there anything more fundamental to healthy biodiversity, fresh air and water, etc.. then forests?

The FSC organization has written respected international standards for responsibly managing our world's forests. In short, a sustainable forest is one which is harvested in a manner which allows the forest to retain it's natural characteristics.

A natural forest supports trees which may be 500 years of age or more. How can we presume to understand the incredibly dynamic and complex interactions of the various processes which occur over the course of such a lifespan? We deprive our forests and thereby ourselves, of the benefits of these interactions under traditional forest management where forests are regularly considered to be mature at 30 - 50 years at which point they would likely be harvested completely.

The FSC is our best hope to ensure that within a stand of trees say 50 years old, many will be left behind upon harvest, to continue deeper into their lifecycle.

There are other certification standards available, only the FSC is accepted by leading environmental organizations- the only ones who really matter when it comes to protecting and conserving our right to a beautiful, sustainable planet.

If your an architect, specify FSC on your designs, if your a builder, use FSC on your projects... your children will thank you.
