Louisville: City of Parks

Mayor Abramson, who enjoys tremendous support from the community (informally, he's known as "Mayor for Life"), has championed projects that support parks, local food, and healthy living. He's worked hard to create strong neighborhoods and support local businesses. Over his tenure-he's the longest-standing mayor in Louisville's history-he's overseen the revitalization of downtown with waterfront parks, historic preservation districts, and small local businesses and restaurants.

A forward-thinking mayor and proactive local community are pushing Louisville toward a more sustainable future. A commitment toward sustainability can be seen in the enthusiasm for a local food supply, plans for more parks, a high rate of waste diversion, and a collaborative citywide project to educate and design projects incorporating healthier approaches for people and the economy.

The primary way that Louisville can strengthen its commitment to sustainability is by developing public transportation options, making it easier for people to get around without driving their cars. It also has to contend with sprawl, and has an opportunity to create a healthier environment by investing in renewable energy sources and creating incentives for green building and green businesses.
