Comment on Vicki W.'s review of Green Bags

here's what they have written on the website. A sound bite tells us that they contain a mineral that absorbs the ethylene gas. They look great, but I minimize my use of plastic bags anyway that I can! Anyone know what mineral the bags are treated with?

"Prolong the Life of Your Food
Tired of throwing out rotten food? DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® prolong the life of your fruits, vegetables and cut flowers without the use of chemicals. Stock up on produce without worrying about rapid spoilage or extend the life of your homegrown fruits and veggies.

How DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® Work
Fruits, vegetables and flowers release ethylene gas while ripening after harvesting or picking. Ethylene gas accelerates ripening, aging and rotting. DEBBIE MEYER™ Green Bags® absorb and remove this damaging gas, dramatically extending the life of fruits, vegetables and flowers."

What are these "green bags" made of (looks like plastic and I can't support more of THOSE!) and how do they absorb ethylene gas?

Comment on Jenn A.'s review of Crushed Tomatoes with Basil

You're right Jenn. I just wanted to let folks know they could use fresh tomatoes the exact same way. No need to blanch, peel etc.
Some might not know that. Just cut and place in already hot pan with olive oil, garlic, fresh herbs etc.
Have you read Barbara Kingsolver's book, "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle"? I HIGHLY reccommend it for everyone that eats food!

Comment on Cris B.'s review of Fudge Brownie Mix

I just wanted to remind folks that hydrogenated products/ingredients such margarines have had alot of research done on them and have been proven to be unhealthy. Better to avoid them and eat whole, unprocessed fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds.

A lifetime of brownie eating (and the accompanying SAD [standard American diet]) can lead to type II diabetes and other health problems. Just ask my mom.

ok..off my soapbox!

have a wonderful day!

Don't eat anything with margarine.....It's TOXIC to the body!
Look up "hydrogenated oil" on the web and see what you find. No healthy food product contains margarine.

Comment on Jay G.'s review of Garden Gourmet Compost Bin

After a few years of dumping all our green waste in a compost bin made of 4 recycled pallettes and chicken wire (to keep the chihuahuas out), we finally took it apart, got all the beautiful composted material out, turned the rest and before putting the whole mess back together,we harvested about 3 tall trash cans worth of luscious homegrown compost!
So this year we're not buying those big plastic bags of commercial compost from the nursery, but using our own. We have natually clay soil, so the rich, dark, loose compost is a welcome addition to the garden beds. So far we've planted lettuces, kale, summer squash, potatoes, peas, beans, edible chrysanthemums, cape gooseberries etc.

Glad to hear of success with the plastic bins. I always had infestations of strange insect grubs when I tried them. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. They sure look nicer than my old pallette/chicken wire bin!

PS....The chihuahuas and the cat keep most of the rodents on the run. They always run to the bin as soon as they get out the door. They're protecting their "stash" from unseen (by me) marauders I'm sure!
