Comment on Adam W.'s review of The WE Campaign

Scientific fact is to lead the charge? Unassailable scientific fact will take us into a brighter future?

Wasn't there a Republican presidential debate during which a majority of candidates declared that they don't believe in evolution?

Comment on Adam W.'s review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated

It feels cynical not to be surprised, but I'm not surprised, not at the secrecy and not at the discrepancies in the standards. If there's a lesson here, it might be how creating a board and publishing ratings produced the illusion of standards and regulations and safeguards, and how few people checked to see who was the man behind the curtain.

Comment on Jenn A.'s review of Berkeley Bowl Marketplace

No one goes there any more, it's too crowded.

Comment on Eliza G.'s review of Hang it Up

The intended point of this review was to collect ideas about a way to ask drivers who are using cell phones to hang up. Law enforcement isn't going to cut it. The fine in California will start at $20. I can't call that much of a deterrent, leaving out the fact that people will still be talking.

As I said before, nothing angry - just a wave that conveys a simple request to hang it up.

Comment on Adam W.'s review of Plastic Bags into Yarn

How about you raid your mother's garage and we meet on a street corner to make the exchange? As someone who's taken canvas bags to stores for years and years, I sometimes have to ask for paper just to be able to put the garbage out. The only time I get plastic is in Chinatown - there's no avoiding it there, I've tried.

But - I also have a super-sized crochet hook and would love to make my own unique shopping tote. Interesting to see how what ought to be a straightforward recycling project can branch into something else. The human condition?

I promise not to start taking plastic bags in order to recycle them!

Comment on Christa B.'s review of Organic Promise Cereal-Strawberry Fields

Still crisp after 20 minutes? Without wanting to criticize the cereal, what do they do to make that happen? How natural is that?

Comment on Jenn A.'s review of Vegan Chocolate Selection

Uncanny how chocolate can do that - cry out in the night - while broccoli lies silent in the refrigerator...

Comment on Adam W.'s review of Plastic Bags into Yarn

This idea looks a lot better on paper than it does in practice. I checked out the website, and the number of plastic bags needed to construct anything useful is beyond obscene.

Is it still recycling if I raid the bin at Whole Foods?

Comment on Howard G.'s review of Organic Cotton Tampons

This review contains inaccurate information regarding toxic shock syndrome. Organic tampons do not affect the odds of a woman experiencing toxic shock syndrome. You don't need to take my word for it - you can read the insert in the box.

Comment on Eliza G.'s review of Twirl-A-Squirrel

Some bird enthusiasts were totally outraged at the concept, but I don't think it's a coincidence that none of them complained about squirrels emptying their feeders. I talked to someone who owns a Twirl-etc., and he made two primary points. One, it's not about injuring squirrels, you want to be careful where you put the feeder. Two, when the squirrels got so numerous that there were no longer any birds around, he had to either discourage the squirrels or stop feeding. He chose option number one. He still sees the occasional squirrel land on the grass and depart unharmed, and he's back to feeding and watching birds. It feels like a workable solution.

I'm staying with the birdbath and occasional handful of oatmeal.

Comment on Jenn A.'s review of Soba Noodles

Buckwheat is also gluten free, but as anyone with Celiac already knows, it's imperative to read the label. Most varieties of soba noodles also contain wheat.

Comment on Adam W.'s review of Detoxifying Leeches

Without being completely sure I want to know the answer - where do you get the leeches? Are they expensive? Do you take them back when they're full? Can they live in a jar in the refrigerator or do you need a leech cage? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the concept...

Comment on James E.'s review of HTnaturals

Do you happen to remember whether you got the "Brittania" or the "Basic" bamboo t-shirt? The one is a little heavier. I'm wondering which comes closest to a standard weight cotton. Bamboo is an amazing fabric, I'm glad to find it in a t-shirt.

These look like good shirts from a company that seems to be doing it right.
