Chris - not only are you not a pest, you are very helpful. What's the use of organic fruit in your product if you cover it up with synthetic smells? Makes no sense to me. Of course, just about every body care product does the same, considering the lack of restrictions on the labels. Still do love those bath bombs though :)
HA! Excellent - I thrive on terrible/awesome puns :)
Gotta love subtle literary/pop culture references... (maybe not so subtle)
Robert - Can you tell me how/through what processes this product works? I would be very interested in finding out and nothing on the website was very helpful.
I just read that Terracycle settled the lawsuit under some very strange conditions. They agreed to change the colors on their label (I will admit, there product label did look pretty similar to MiracleGro), but they also agreed to stop using the independent tests in their advertising that showed that Terracycle is more effective than MiracleGro, and to take down the website Terracycle put up detailing the MiracleGro lawsuit. Here is the source for these things by the way - http://www.sustainableisgood.com/blog/2007/09/scotts-and-terr.html
Looks to me like one of two things happened. 1 - Terracycle was using bad studies in their advertising. This is certainly a possibility, but I have seen nothing to suggest it. 2 - MiracleGro is a really shady company that used its large budget and legal power to stifle a competitor.
My personal opinion is that the answer is situation 2, and we should all be outraged. Buy Terracycle - Boycott MiracleGro!
You should check out Flip and Tumble bags. They are brand new, and are kind of an upgrade to Chico Bags (gotta admit, I still love my chico :)
There is no question that the fact that one bag takes 900 plastic bags (yes, you read that correctly) to make is obscene. The question is whether it is better for the environment to use those plastic bags for recycling like at whole foods, or to actually reuse those plastic bags. On the one hand, the idea of having 900 plastic bags is pretty gnarly. On the other hand, I know people who have entire drawers full of this stuff. There is no doubt in my mind that my mom for instance has that many bags in her garage. Instead of taking them to be recycled, which still emits pollutants and carbon and requires energy, you can turn them into something really cool on your own. Who knows, depending on your worldview, it might even be worth it to raid the whole foods bin - at least you would stop those bags from ever emitting pollutants again!
I apologize - i love them so much it just didn't occur to me that anyone would not know what they are :)
Dutch eggs are Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of ham.
Ouch on the lemon wedge story - If I had known you were actually going to review this place I would have left it to you. Maybe I can just stick to my own story of the bartender muddling the mango 8 times to make sure he got it right...
An art teacher once famously critiqued his student's modern art project by remarking that Picasso had to learn the rules of art before he could break them. Similarly, your sister is teaching your nephew the norms and regulations of our society. This is an important lesson that he must learn if he is to ever comprehend the difference between random flings of oatmeal and a well timed pie-to-the-face.
As for those poor drivers, critical mass has been held on the last Friday of every month for almost 10 years. San Francisco has incredible public transportation - there is absolutely no reason why anyone "needs" to drive in to the city on that one day out of the month. Park your car and take the BART - that's what it's there for, and there are plenty of places to let you do it. Or if you really really want the convenience of your car, drive in to town and stay around after work. Eat some dinner, have a drink - then go home. The only drivers who have excuses for being on the road are tourists (who don't really care anyway - they love critical mass) and taxi drivers. I can understand why taxi drivers are mad.
You are however right I think when you say that Critical Mass does nothing to support bicycling, bike laws, or biker-driver relations. It may have started as that, but it certainly doesn't do it anymore. The only real purpose of Mass is to give people a chance to do something one day a month that they are not allowed to do the rest of the month. It turns, just for a few hours, the traffic flow of the city of San Francisco (or any other city it takes place in) on it's head. That alone is worth everything. people need constant reminders that the ways things are or should be needs to be turned upside down once in a while
You wouldn't be referring to anyone in particular here...
Valid point Jenn - lets keep sexual harassment out of the workplace!
Sounds like someone is a little hot under the collar
You gots to love that tingle!
Choosing the right companies to attend/sponsor your event is a complicated task indeed. In terms of water bottles, I would recommend Klean Kanteen, but there are certainly other bottle companies who are also doing their part to help the planet.
Rather than suggest any other companies, I would simply advise you to do your research. SustainLane is a great website for seeing what is both good and bad about a company, but there are plenty of others out there as well. Just remember, nobody is perfect, every company has a skeleton or two in their closet, but through careful research you can find the best ones and promote them and sustainability in general.
I hope that helps,
Adam
What a great question! I think the easiest answer is that if there was an easy answer, we would have done it already :). I think there are several things we can all do to help make the world a more sustainable place:
1. I do think that the green business luncheon was doing a good thing by handing out Nalgenes instead of bottled water - regardless of what else you have to say about Nalgene, it is DEFINITELY better than bottled water.
2. Do your research - by coming to this one website, you already learned so much about the plastic bottle debate - you now know all the downsides of the plastics in Nalgene and their corporate practices. You also now know alternatives.
3. Share what you learn - I am sure the people at the green business luncheon would be just as surprised as you to find out that there are in fact downsides to Nalgene. Plus, I am sure there are other practices/products out there you know more about than anyone at SustainLane - share your wisdom!
According to the article, the leeches Demi used were not "just swamp leeches" but "highly trained medical leeches" (I can only hope she was joking). I really don't know the answer that question, and i think I agree that i don't think I want to.
